Mobile to Mobile Convergence (MMC)
MMC is a technology used in modern computing and telephony. The term is an evolution of FMC (fixed mobile convergence) and uses dual mode (GSM and WiFi) phones with a special software client and an application server to connect voice calls via WiFi and/or through a cellular service.
Mobile to mobile convergence differs from conventional FMC in that the technology uses the WiFi to route calls via IP networks or the Internet as a primary function, and uses the wireless carrier as a secondary network if the WiFi is not present.
Significantly, it enables a more efficient use of networking technology than standard FMC solutions. Since most of the latter use the carrier network as the primary means of communication, they do not leverage the lower cost and controls of internet protocol-based networks that are generally installed at most modern businesses and increasingly in the home.
MMC also provides a greatly increased voice coverage area when compared to standard carrier networks. By supplementing traditional mobile networks with WiFi technology extends the availability of mobile connectivity. Poor cellular coverage can now be resolved with a simple deployment of WiFi in either the work or home environment.

Difference Between MMC and FMC
- The core value of FMC is to make use of mobile phones as an extension (mobile extension) for existing phone systems such as the PBX.
- The core value of MMC is to make use of to most efficient route to receive or make phone calls on mobile devices. These can be WiFi networks, 3G, edge, or LTE.
MMC enables the optimum mix of cost and quality. And, with Mondial Telecom, it is easy to implement.
Market Trends Supporting MMC
- Today, over 50% of the mobile calls we make are from locations where a fixed WiFi network is available, with home & the office being over 30% of these calls. The availability of WiFi continues to increase at a rapid pace, driven by the demand and use of WiFi enabled devices in the home and office.
- WiFi enabled Smartphones will capture 37% of the worldwide cell phone market by 2014, a leap from 16% in 2009. There will be approximately 200 million Smartphones in Europe by 2014.
- The exponential growth in Smartphone apps and the use of the mobile Internet is resulting in many MNOs seeking WiFi offload solutions to cope with the overwhelming demand for mobile data.
These market trends combine to create ideal conditions for the adoption of Mondial Telecom’s MMC solutions by Operators, MVNOs and ISPs.
